Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Landlords must make sure their rental properties have working smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarms installed.

Alarms
Smoke alarms are required on every storey of the premises where living accommodation is provided (for example, if the living accommodation is a flat above a shop, a smoke alarm is required on all levels).
Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in every room that contains a gas fire, gas wall heater, gas central heating boiler, open fire or a solid fuel burner.
Failure to comply with this legislation may lead to landlords being issued with a fixed penalty fine of up to £5,000.
