The Local Council Award Scheme celebrates the achievements of high‑performing local councils. It also provides a clear framework to help all councils improve and reach their full potential.
Councils can use the scheme to show that they meet recognised standards set by the sector. All awards are independently assessed by peers, helping to support ongoing improvement.
The scheme supports councils at every stage of their development , from those beginning their improvement journey to those leading the way in good practice. By sharing learning and setting high standards, the sector can continue to grow and improve for the benefit of local communities.
Award levels
Councils can apply for an award at one of three levels:
- Bronze Award - Shows that a council is operating lawfully and following standard practice.
- Silver Award - Shows that a council demonstrates good practice in governance, community engagement and continuous improvement.
- Gold Award - Shows that a council demonstrates excellence in governance, community leadership and council development. Councils at this level are recognised as sector leaders.

Training bursary
The Cheshire Branch of the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) offers a training bursary to help local councils improve their services.
The bursary supports members who may not otherwise be able to access training.

Cheshire Association of Local Councils (ChALC)
Officers at Cheshire East Council are encouraged to regularly liaise with and involve officers at the Cheshire Association of Local Councils (ChALC)
ChALC is a member-based organisation that represents local councils and provides advice, support and training.
We work together to promote high standards of ethical behaviour across the borough.
