It is estimated that 1.6 million accidents occur each year in the workplace with a cost to industry of around £700m. It is important to identify the cause of accidents so they can be prevented in future to reduce injury, ill-health and costs to businesses.

Businesses should investigate accidents in their workplace so that they can take steps to reduce the risk of them happening again.

RIDDOR - Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 2013

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR), place a legal duty on employers, self-employed people and people in control of premises to report:

  • work-related deaths
  • major injuries or over - seven-day injuries
  • work related diseases
  • and dangerous occurrences (near miss accidents)
  • All incidents can be reported online but a telephone service remains for reporting fatal and major injuries only - call the incident contact centre on 0345 300 9923 (opening hours Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5 pm)
