Mayor of Cheshire East
- Councillor Roger West
Councillor Roger West is the third Mayor of Cheshire East
Council. Councillor West was appointed to the Office on 18th May
2011.
Roger was born in Prestbury and is married to Joanna. He
has 4 children and three grandchildren.
He went to school in Flixton, attending Wellacre Academy. In
1958, Roger’s first job was with a consulting structural engineers
practice in St Ann’s Square, Manchester Roger then joined ICI
Pharmaceuticals at Alderley Park and Macclesfield. In 1999, after
30 enjoyable years, Roger took early retirement from what is now
AstraZeneca.
In 2002 Roger was elected to Poynton Parish Council, where he
became Chairman in 2005. In 2004 Roger was elected to
Macclesfield Borough Council and became Portfolio Holder for Waste
Services and Streetscene. Since joining Cheshire East, Roger
has been Chairman of Northern Planning and represented the Council
on the Board of Cheshire Peaks and Plains Housing Trust. He
is currently a governor at two schools in Poynton, both rated as
outstanding by Ofsted.
His hobbies include following Manchester United FC.

Councillor George Walton
Councillor George Walton was appointed to the Office of Deputy
Mayor on 18th May 2011.
Brought up on the outskirts of Burnley in the Parish of
Ightenhill, George attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School
following which he undertook a three year course in the Civil
Engineering Department at Loughborough University. He graduated in
July 1963 and commenced work as a Site Engineer with Sir Robert
McAlpine & Sons Ltd, the well known national Building &
Civil Engineering Contractors on a new, large, innovative
comprehensive school in South Yorkshire followed by further Site
experience on the construction of a 13 mile section of the MI
Motorway between Leicester and Nottingham.
In 1966 he married Veronica and they have two sons Michael and
Nicholas and two grandsons.
George continued to be employed by McAlpine, based in Knutsford,
working on a variety of projects, including Sizewell ‘B’.
George retired at the end of January 1997 and successfully stood
for election to Knutsford Town Council in May 1999. George was
appointed to the position of Mayor of Knutsford, in 2001. George
went on to represent the Bexton Ward on Macclesfield Borough
Council until he was elected to the Bucklow Ward of Cheshire
East Council. George works tirelessly for his constituents and has
served on a great number of Council Committees and Working
Parties.
George is a keen gardener and has had an allotment in Knutsford
since 1982. He has been a volunteer guide for taking visitors round
the Japanese Garden in Tatton Park and received a 5 year award from
the National Trust. George is a Member of the Rotary Club of
Knutsford getting involved in charity fundraising events whenever
he can. Veronica is an active member of the Inner Wheel Club
of Knutsford, is a member of Cranford Quilters, Toft Quilters and a
regular attendee of Toft Parish Church. When time allows he enjoys
watching Burnley FC.
