Road safety

We are committed to improving road safety for all road users, working in partnership with other organisations to improve road safety in Cheshire East.

We are a member of the Cheshire East Road Safety Executive Board, which includes Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Constabulary.

We are also an active member of the Cheshire Road Safety Group (opens in an external window) which co-ordinates speed cameras and the cameras at traffic lights.

We identify road safety issues through collision and casualty analysis and through discussions with Cheshire Police and partner organisations.

How we assess road safety requests

Each request is assessed using evidence and local context, which may include:

  • collision and casualty data from the previous 5 years
  • police reports
  • speed data
  • road layout, visibility and existing speed limits
  • proximity to schools, shops and community facilities
  • levels of pedestrian and cycle activity
  • impact on vulnerable road users
  • engineering feasibility
  • enforceability

How schemes are prioritised

Following assessment, locations with clear evidence of risk, such as:

  • injury collisions linked to the road layout or traffic behaviour
  • significant school safety concerns
  • high pedestrian or cycle activity with poor crossing provision
  • police identified safety issues

Links to other highways programmes

Some requests may be better delivered through other Council initiatives, such as:

  • Speed Management Strategy
  • Active Travel schemes
  • Developer funded works (Section 106 or 278)
  • Signing and lining improvements
