Heavy goods vehicles and weight restrictions
Report a heavy goods vehicle (HGV)
If you see a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on a road with a weight limit, report it to the police.
- Call 101 (non-emergency)
- The council cannot take legal action in these cases
“Except for access” weight limits
Some roads have a sign that says “except for access”.
This means:
- Large vehicles can use the road if they need to visit a property on it
- If they do not need access, they should not use the road
How weight limits are checked
It can be hard for the police to enforce weight limits.
They may need to:
- Follow the vehicle
- Take it to a weighbridge to check its weight
