Lifelong learning
English, Maths and English for speakers of other Languages courses (ESOL)
Free courses are available to help adults improve their essential skills in English and maths, or to learn English as a second language.
Our partners offer:
- English – from basic reading and writing to more advanced skills
- Maths – everyday numeracy, budgeting, and preparation for work
- ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) – for anyone whose first language isn’t English
Courses are delivered in friendly, supportive settings across Cheshire East. You’ll learn at your own pace, with tutors who understand your needs.
Who the courses are for
These courses are for adults aged 19 (on or before 31st August of each academic year) and over who live in Cheshire East. You don’t need any previous qualifications — just a willingness to learn.
- Tailored learning is free for everyone who meets residency requirements.
- Accredited courses are free if you’re receiving benefits.
- If you’re not on benefits, part-funding may be available.
How to apply for a course
You can apply directly or be referred by a support service. Just contact the relevant partner organisations (see below) to get started. They’ll help you choose the right course and guide you through the next steps.
What happens after you apply
Once you’ve applied, a tutor or advisor will contact you to confirm your place and discuss any support you might need. You’ll receive details about your course start date, location, and any materials you’ll need. If the course is full, you may be offered a place on a waiting list or an alternative option.
Find out more about English and Maths
You can take practical English and Maths courses up to Level 2. These are like GCSEs and are accepted by colleges and universities. They can help you get onto further education courses, apprenticeships or training programmes. Find out more from Springboard.
Find out more about ESOL
Non-English speakers aged 19 and over can take English classes to get recognised qualifications. Drop-in sessions are also available for extra learning support. Find out more from Cheshire, Halton And Warrington Race and Equality Centre (CHAWREC).
