What school nurses can help with
School nurses can support children and young people with:
- Help protect children’s health: School nurses give immunisations and vaccinations. They carry out health screening when needed.
- Check children’s health needs: They do health assessments at key stages. They weigh and measure children in Reception and Year 6 as part of the National Child Measurement Programme.
- Help children stay healthy: They give simple, clear advice about staying healthy and avoiding risky behaviours. They also run planned PSHE sessions in schools.
- Support children and families who need extra help: School nurses help spot when a child or family needs more support. They make sure the right help is put in place.
- Keep children safe (safeguarding): They look out for early signs that a child may not be safe. They work with other services to keep children safe.
They may offer advice in school, at home, online or by phone.
