Pre-patching works
From May, we undertake a surface dressing programme. Surface dressing adds a new layer on top of an existing road surface and is a well-established, cost-effective preventative maintenance treatment.
Why pre‑patching is needed
Before surface dressing can be applied, the road surface must be structurally sound. Defects such as cracks, potholes and worn asphalt weaken the road surface and reduce the effectiveness and longevity of the surface dressing, pre‑patching repairs these issues first to ensure a stable base and proper adhesion of the new surface.
How pre‑patching supports surface dressing
- Improves adhesion by filling cracks, voids and damaged areas so the bitumen and aggregate bond correctly.
- Protects the road structure by reducing water ingress, helping prevent further deterioration.
- Ensures a smoother, more even surface, reducing the risk of loose chippings and enhancing durability.
- Extends the expected life of the micro‑surface dressing, reducing future maintenance needs.
- Improves safety through a more consistent surface and better skid resistance.
Weather and timing
Pre‑patching must be completed before the application of surface dressing which has to be carried out in dry, warmer conditions to ensure materials cure properly. Works are typically planned for spring and summer to achieve the best results and minimise disruption.

Road closures and diversions
Under current Health and Safety legislation and for the safety of our workforce and members of the public, it will be necessary for road closures to be in place during these works.
Whilst the works are being completed suitable diversion routes will be in place.
Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times, cyclists may be asked to dismount through the roadworks.
Bus services will continue, but there may be some impact to the service. Check their website for more information including timetable changes.
Waste collection services will not be affected.
Emergency services know about the works and will have access.
You can view diversion routes and roadworks on our Roadworks Map. (opens in a new window)
Access and communication
- A letter drop will take place and those who are directly impacted by these works will be informed. This letter does not grant you access through the closure at all times as access points may be restricted for safety reasons.
- Emergency vehicle access will be facilitated through the closure
- The road closures are necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce whilst we complete the most complex aspects of the scheme
- Local businesses will remain open and access will be facilitated where possible via diversion routes
- Delays are expected and motorists should plan journeys accordingly
- Ensure that no vehicles are parked along the impacted roads
