Surface Dressing Programme 2026

From May until August 2026, we will be undertaking our surface dressing programme across the borough.

Surface dressing adds a new layer to an existing road. It helps protect the road surface, improves grip and makes roads last longer. It is a proven and cost‑effective way to maintain our roads.

To complete the work, we visit each road several times. We prepare the road first, then apply the new surface. We return later to sweep away loose chippings and put road markings back.

Changes to dates

The dates for these works may change and we may not be able to give you an exact date. Surface dressing cannot be undertaken in high temperatures or during periods of wet weather. This mean works may be delayed or moved at short notice.

Signs will be placed on site to tell you:

  • when the road will be closed
  • the dates and times of the works
  • how long the works are expected to last

Roads included in the programme

Access and parking

Surface dressing is very difficult to carry out if vehicles are parked on the road.

Make sure:

  • your vehicle is moved before the works start
  • visitors do not park on the road
  • if you are going away during the period of the works, please arrange for your vehicle to be moved from the road

This helps avoid delays and damage to vehicles.

Once the new surface is laid, the road will be swept within 24 hours. Vehicles can park again in permitted areas after this first sweep.

Further sweeping may take place until the surface is fully secure.

Letters to residents and businesses

We will send a letter to all affected properties before the works begin.

Please note:

  • the letter does not allow access through the road closure
  • access may be restricted for safety reasons

If you have special access needs, please speak to the site supervisor as soon as possible.

Local businesses will remain open as normal. Access will be provided where it is safe to do so, or via diversion routes.

Road closures and diversion routes

Road closures are needed to keep both the public and our workforce safe.

  • Signed diversion routes will be in place
  • Please follow the diversion signs
  • Full diversion details can be found on OneNetwork (opens new window)

Bus companies are aware of the works. Services may run on different routes or timetables, so please check the operator’s website.

Waste collection services will not be affected.

During and after the works

You can help us by following this advice:

  • Do not drive on the wet surface
  • Do not walk on it or allow pets onto it
  • The material can stick to shoes, paws, carpets and driveways

Once the surface is dry:

  • drive carefully and keep below 20mph
  • this helps protect the surface and your vehicle

Clean shoes before entering your property. We cannot accept responsibility for damage caused by ignoring this advice.

About 7 days after the work, we will return to sweep away any remaining loose chippings. Please keep the road clear of parked vehicles at this time.

Any road markings covered by the works will be replaced after the final sweep.

Further information

  • Emergency services will always have access
  • Local businesses will remain open
  • Delays are likely – plan journeys ahead
  • Do not park vehicles in the works area
