Council survey on the future of Cheshire East Adult Carers Service

Cheshire East Council is inviting residents to help shape adult carer support services in the borough, through sharing their experiences as a carer and what is most valuable to them. 

In the UK, around 11.9 million people provide unpaid care, saving the state £184 billion a year in 2021/22. Yet many carers feel invisible or may not even recognise themselves as a carer and face significant inequalities compared to those without caring responsibilities. 

Cheshire East’s Carers Hub is currently run by Making Space who, as of 31 June 2025, had 7,942 adult carers registered with them. 

Unpaid carers – often family members, friends or neighbours, play a crucial role in supporting adults who could not manage without their help. From caring for an ageing parent to supporting someone with a disability or long-term illness, carers make an enormous contribution to our communities. Yet many face challenges that impact their health, wellbeing and quality of life. 

The council’s proposed redesign aims to strengthen the support available for carers, ensuring they receive help throughout and beyond their caring role. This includes a more holistic approach to meeting carers’ needs, whether financial, social, emotional, psychological or physical, and aligns with the council’s commitment to improving health and wellbeing under the Cheshire East Plan (2025–2029). 

Councillor Jill Rhodes, chair of Cheshire East Council’s adults and health committee, said: “Unpaid carers are the backbone of our communities, and we want to make sure they have the right support at the right time.  

“This survey is an opportunity for carers and residents to shape a service that truly reflects their needs and experiences. Your voice matters, so please do take part and help us build a stronger, more inclusive support offer for carers in Cheshire East.”
