Waste strategy, policy and performance

Recycling and waste performance

We want to say a big thank you to all our residents who have been recycling their waste through the silver bin and for those who have subscribed to the garden bin service.

The latest figures (2023 - 2024) show that our recycling rate is at 51.6%. This has dropped from previous years, the Council takes its environmental impact seriously and we continue to look at alternative ways to deliver the service to help residents increase their recycling.

The Council are working to introduce three weekly collections along side the roll-out of weekly food waste collections these service changes should enable residents to recycle more of their waste and boost the recycling rate of the Borough.

In order to see how well we are doing in our recycling we carry out composition studies of the waste that we collect (PDF, 1MB) (latest 2020) to see what is being disposed of and to help us target our communications messages

Municipal waste management strategy

Our municipal waste management strategy sets out how we intend to reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and dispose of municipal waste between 2014 and 2030. Our strategy sets out key aims and objectives for the management of waste.

Due to the rapidly changing nature of the waste industry we regularly review the strategy, the latest one being carried out in 2020.

Waste Management and Fly-tipping Policy

This policy sets out the services that the Council will provide to manage household waste in a safe and cost-effective way that encourages waste minimisation and recycling.

It establishes the positive behaviours that the Council expects residents to display in order that their waste is stored, collected and recycled in a regular and efficient manner, without detrimental impact to their neighbourhood’s local environmental quality.

The policy also explains the steps the Council will take should residents fail to demonstrate such action, including all aspects of fly-tipped waste.

Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) review

Part of our municipal waste management strategy was to review the HWRC network. We undertook an independent review and consulted on our preferred choice.
