Protected playing fields

School playing field land is protected under Section 77 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998

What counts as a playing field

For the purposes of Section 77, a playing field includes:

• grassed areas and sports pitches
• tarmac playgrounds
• games courts
• land used for social or recreational activities

Changing or disposing of playing field land

You must apply to the Secretary of State if you want to:

• change how playing field land is used, or
• sell, lease, or otherwise dispose of land classed as a playing field
