Success for Supported Internships

10 October 2022

So far it has been another brilliant year for supported internships across Cheshire East. We had 33 new interns last academic year 2021/22 and 79% or 26 of these young people are now in paid work. This is a fantastic achievement.

A supported internship is a final year of education, and the aim of the programme is to help young people transition from education into paid work. We believe the success of the programme is due to effective vocational profiling, accurate job matching and intensive job coaching.

Job coaches are trained in systematic instruction- which is a training method which breaks down tasks into easy-to-follow steps. We are clear with all employers before interns start on their work placement, that young people on a supported internship are not just accessing work experience, it is about ‘learning real skills, for a real job’.

We have seen young people progress into a variety of paid roles. These roles have included manufacturing, retail, sport and leisure, care, childcare, engineering, office work and hospitality. Employers have included Marks and Spencer’s, Siemens, Waitrose, McDonalds, Bupa, The Rossendale Trust, The Tytherington Club, and many more.

Throughout the year we will be sharing one case study per month. These case studies will each feature one of our fabulous interns, and their journey into paid work.

The first intern we would like to introduce you to is George. George did his supported internship through Macclesfield College. George is now in paid work at the Tytherington Club as a food and beverage assistant. George now works completely independently. Whilst at the Tytherington Club, we were approached by three customers who all told us how fabulous George is. Excellent at his job, and always puts a smile on everyone’s face. Go George!

Please see attached a photograph of George, his job coach and his manager.
