A523 The Silk Road – Gas Road Bridge improvement works
We will be carrying out bridge improvement works on the Gas Road Bridge, A523 The Silk Road, Macclesfield.
What is happening
Works to deliver essential improvement works are scheduled to take place from Monday 26 January until Sunday 15 February 2026.
The work includes:
- replacing the bridge and carriageway joints
- installing new street lighting
- improving the footway
- reconstructing and cleansing gullies
- resurfacing and remarking the carriageway between the junction of A537 Buxton Road junction and just north of the bridge and carriageway joint.
We understand that there is no right time to work in such a key location and this scheme has been carefully planned to minimise disruption.
Road closures and diversions
To comply with current health and safety legislation and for the safety of our workforce and members of the public, the following road and lane closures will be in place from Hurdsfield Road roundabout to the junction with A537 Buxton Road:
- Overnight road closure of A523 The Silk Road between 10pm and 5am for the duration of the works (excluding Sunday nights).
- Daytime lane closures on A523 The Silk Road throughout the works and advised by onsite signage.
A suitable diversion route will be in place. Weekend working will be required to ensure that work is completed in line with the proposed schedule.
Pedestrian access will be maintained, and they will be directed through the works. Cyclists will need to follow the signed diversion.
Bus services will continue during the closure, however, there may be some impact to the service. Bus companies are aware and may be operating a revised route - please check their website for more information regarding route/timetable changes.
Waste collection services will not be affected.
Emergency services will be notified of the diversion route prior to the works commencing.

- The road and lane closures are necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce.
- Diversion routes will be signed to assist in the movement of traffic while works progress.
- Local businesses remain open and access will be facilitated with suitable diversion routes.
- On site personnel will be on hand to provide help and advice to members of the public for the duration of the scheme and are the best way to find out more information about these works.
- Delays are expected and motorists should plan journeys accordingly.
- Signage will be out in advance of the works starting and will be located at key points on the road.
