Cheshire East Network North funding
Made possible by reallocated HS2 funding
Over the last 5 years Cheshire East Council has invested a total of £141m into maintaining the highway network within the Borough with £71m of that investment supported through grant funding from the Department of Transport.
Made possible by reallocated HS2 funding,Cheshire East Council will now receive an additional £110 million of Government funding for highway maintenance repairs between 2023 and 2034.
This will allow the authority to deliver more highway maintenance schemes across the Borough which might not have otherwise been undertaken.
In delivering the Network North Programme the authority will be making use of new technology and innovations. This will include:
- The use of artificial intelligence to identify highway condition enabling us to prioritise appropriate improvement schemes.
- Make use of innovative low carbon solutions for carriageway and footway works, supporting the Council’s sustainability targets and helping to reduce the climate impacts of schemes.
- The use of “lock chip” in our surface dressing treatments to prolong the life of the new surface.
This year the Council will use the first allocations of funding to:
- Improve approximately 14 miles of major strategic routes which are vital in connecting our towns across the Borough.
- Repairing footways which have been identified as defect hotspots.

Traffic impacts
For the safety of our workforce and members of the public, it will be necessary for a road closure to be in place during these works.
Within each scheme closure we will look to undertake additional ancillary improvements including sign and line refreshing, gully emptying, road traffic collision repairs, litter picking, green maintenance and active travel improvements.
All carriageway and footway works will have a Section 58 restriction put in place under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991. A Section 58 restriction allows a local authority to protect a street from any planned street works following any major works. This restriction can be in place for up to five years depending on the type of work that has taken place.
The process promotes better works planning and co-ordination, helps minimise disruption to road users, and helps to prolong the life of the roads.
For further information on these schemes and other highway maintenance works within the borough please see our road repair and improvement programmeRoad repair and improvement programme 2023-2024 for this year's plans.
Access to your property or business
We will make every effort to maintain vehicle access to your property or business. However, due to the nature of the works some disruption may still occur and there could be times when point of entry may vary.
Your safety and the safety of our workforce is our priority. Our traffic management officers will be supplied with CCTV cameras, and they will assist you as works progress.
Diversion Route
There will be signed diversions in place for each road closure listed above, and members of the public are advised to follow this. Alternatively, a breakdown of the full diversion route can be found here: one.network
