Right Child, Right Home project - case study
1 May 2025
We’re transforming the ways we deliver services within children’s social care.
Projects like Right Child, Right Home have had a positive outcome on vulnerable children and young people, helping them live more independent, fulfilled lives and ensuring that children and young people are placed in care settings that best meet their needs.
The project focuses on aligning support with the true needs of each child, promoting better outcomes and more-independent lives.
Key aspects of the project
- Multi-agency panel – A multi-agency panel was created to review specific social care cases where children and young people were placed in care settings. This panel assesses each case to ensure that the placement is appropriate and provides the necessary support.
- Placement reviews – Since its inception in September, the panel has reviewed 195 placements. These reviews have identified cost-avoidance of over £2.18m in annual costs to the council, while also promoting more-independent outcomes for the children and young people involved.
- Better outcomes – The project aims to ensure children and young people are in placements that support their independence and help them thrive. By continuously reassessing and evolving care packages, the council is committed to enabling young people to live more independent, fulfilled lives and prepare for adulthood.
Case study example
One case involved a child named Sam (not their real name), who initially required a high level of care with a 3:1 staffing ratio, due to complex needs. Over time, with the right support, Sam made significant progress, building independence skills, attending a full school day and engaging in meaningful experiences.
The panel recommended reducing the staffing ratio to promote greater independence, while ensuring Sam has the right level of support, reflecting the council’s commitment to dynamic evaluation and reassessment of needs.
The Right Child, Right Home project shows our dedication to providing tailored support that meets the evolving needs of children and young people, ensuring they receive the best possible care and opportunities for independence.
