Bulky household waste

You can take items which are too big or bulky for your bin to a household waste and recycling centre. If you use a van, pickup, commercial type 4x4 or a trailer over 1.5 metres (internal length), you will need to apply for a household waste permit.

Donate bulky household items

If your items are clean and in good condition, consider donating them to a charity. Check with the organisation directly for collection details and any conditions that apply.

The following organisations may accept bulky items:

• Age UK
• British Heart Foundation
• Changing Lives Together
• East Cheshire Hospice
• Red Cross
• St Luke's Hospice
• St Paul's Centre

This is not an exhaustive list and other charities may also accept bulky items. The council has no affiliation with, endorsement of, or links with these organisations.

Arrange a council bulky waste collection

We can collect bulky household items such as furniture for a fee. We are currently unable to reuse or recycle items collected through our bulky waste collection service.

If your items are clean and in good condition, consider donating them to a charity instead.

Once we receive your payment, we will collect your items within 20 working days. You can make unlimited requests for collections of bulky items through the year. View our list of items we won't collect.

Cost of collections

You pay in advance for a bulky household waste collection as part of the online form. The cost is non-refundable, even if you later reduce the number of items to be collected. The cost of the collection will depend on the number of items. For example, a table and 4 chairs counts as 5 items and cost £101.68 to be collected, a bed base and mattress will count as 2 separate items and cost £50.84 to be collected.

Following confirmation of a bulky waste collection booking, it is the resident's responsibility to notify us of any changes. Where a collection cannot be completed because the items are unavailable for collection and no prior notice has been provided, the collection fee is non-refundable.

Qualifying benefit reductions

There could be a reduction in the cost if you get one of the following qualifying benefits:

• Child Tax Credit (if income is below £16,190)
• Council Tax Support (this does not include single occupancy discount)
• Housing Benefit
• Income Based Employment and Support Allowance
• Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
• Income Support
• Maximum level of Working Families Tax Credit
• Universal Credit

We may check you get the benefit if you request a reduction.

Where to leave your bulky items for collection

Items should be placed outside of your property on the day of collection. Keep any absorbent materials or items such as carpets, mattresses, bed bases and settees dry as they may be too heavy to be taken if they are wet.

Items can be collected from a garage/shed/porch or be covered with plastic/ tarpaulin and left outside within the boundary of the property.

All white goods, for example fridges, freezers, cookers, etc need to emptied before being presented for collection.

Bulky waste we don’t collect

We are unable to collect the following items:

• items used for commercial purposes
• garden waste
• chemicals
• rolls of carpet that will not fold to less than ten feet long
• gas canisters
• sheds
• glass, including glass cabinets
• garage doors
• pianos
• car parts
• trade waste
• paint, oil, solvents or similar liquids
• any waste presented in a black sack
• rubble, building and DIY waste including bathroom suites and furniture, fixtures and fittings
• hazardous waste such as asbestos or corrosive, flammable, explosive or toxic substances
• any large or heavy items that cannot be carried by 2 people
• Soiled mattresses and King size mattresses
