Preparing for Supported Internships

A Supported Internship is usually the final year of education for a young person. The aim is to help you move from education into paid work, with support from a job coach.

Getting ready for a Supported Internship

The most important thing you can do before starting a Supported Internship is to get some experience in a real workplace. This could be through work experience or volunteering. It helps you:

  • understand the type of work you might enjoy
  • build confidence and skills
  • show us what you are good at

This makes it easier for us to find the right work placement for you so you have the best chance of progressing into paid work at the end of the programme.

Your vocational profile

Before you start a Supported Internship, we will work with you and the people who know you best to complete a vocational profile.

This is a document that helps us build a picture of you, including:

  • your interests and strengths
  • any work or volunteering experience
  • information from school or college
  • whether you have completed any travel training
  • the type of support you may need

This information helps us find a placement that meets your needs and gives your job coach the right tools and strategies to support you while you are on the programme.
