Mill House Bridge A523, Adlington
A523 Mill House Bridge, between Adlington and Macclesfield
Following a bridge inspection on Mill House Bridge, Adlington, we need to undertake comprehensive repairs to a collapsed section of the arch that provided support to the southbound traffic lane.
Emergency temporary traffic signals will remain in place between the London Road junction and Hole House Lane until the bridge has been reconstructed and strengthened.
When the work is happening
Work started on 17 June 2025 and will take approximately 26 weeks to complete. Our operatives will be working below the bridge and may not be visible.
The bridge has been stitched, and the surrounding north-south retaining walls have been reconstructed to facilitate the repair work beneath. Foundation underpinning and ground stabilisation are now complete. The restoration of the arch is currently underway.
We anticipate that the temporary lights on the bridge will be removed on Friday 19 December 2025. This is later than previously advised due to additional works needed on the bridge foundations and the delays caused by the impact of Storms Amy and Claudia.
We recognise the importance of this route and are working hard to finish as quickly as possible, including extending working hours and weekend works to minimise further disruption.
A huge amount of work goes into making the site safe, secure, and ready. This timelapse shows the essential groundwork - from creating a safe working environment to ensuring the longevity of the repair.
Highways improvement works
Once the works are complete, the council's highways team will leave the site for Cadent Gas to carry out essential maintenance. While Cadent’s works are not part of this repair, we are working to ensure a smooth transition between phases.
Highway improvements were originally planned after Cadent Gas’s works, but due to a gap in scheduling, they will now take place beforehand. These include signage updates, surface patching, line reinstatement, and vegetation clearance to improve safety.
Please note that these works require bespoke traffic management arrangements and cannot be carried out under the current two-way traffic light system on the A523 London Road.
Further information
- The temporary lights are necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce.
- Further delays are to be expected while plant and materials are brought into site as the traffic will have to be held.
- Pedestrian access is unaffected.
- Cyclist access will be maintained through the traffic lights.
- Local businesses remain unaffected.
