Local highways maintenance transparency report

Date published: June 30 2025

On December 20, 2024, the Government revealed the highway maintenance funding allocations for 2025/26 for all eligible highway authorities. This announcement included an extra £500 million, as stated by the Chancellor in the Autumn 2024 Budget.

The Government specified that 25% of this additional funding will depend on local highway authorities proving their compliance, aimed at encouraging best practice and continuous improvements in highway maintenance.

Authorities must demonstrate that their expenditure strikes the right balance between long-term preventative maintenance and reactive repairs, using a risk-based asset management approach.

The Department for Transport expects all local highway authorities to publish annual reports on their highway maintenance activities, enabling local taxpayers to understand the benefits of the funding in their communities.
