Local highways maintenance transparency report

The Department for Transport (DfT) continues to support local highway authorities through highway maintenance funding allocations, with a proportion of funding linked to authorities demonstrating compliance with national asset management and reporting requirements. This approach is intended to encourage the adoption of best practice and drive continuous improvement in highway maintenance services.

To secure the full funding allocation, local highway authorities are required to demonstrate that highway maintenance activities are informed by a risk-based asset management approach, balancing long-term preventative maintenance with reactive repairs to maximise value for money and network resilience.

As part of these requirements, authorities are expected to publish an annual highways maintenance transparency report. These reports provide residents and stakeholders with information on how highway maintenance funding is being invested and the benefits being delivered across the local highway network.
