Cheshire East recruitment event targets waste and recycling professionals and HGV specialist roles

13 August 2026

Cheshire East Council is holding a recruitment evening on Tuesday 18 August as preparation continues for the introduction of weekly food waste collections.

Following a successful waste and recycling recruitment open day in July, a further event is planned for 5:30 – 8pm on Tuesday 18 August at the Environmental Hub, Middlewich.

There are a range of job role vacancies currently, which include:

  • HGV (Class 2) Waste and Recycling Driver Loaders
  • HGV Mechanic Fitters
  • HGV Driver Academy Apprenticeship
  • Waste Team Leader
  • Waste Transfer Station Operative

We would also like to invite anyone who may be interested in our new Waste and Recycling Driver academy apprenticeships. This is a funded progression route to become a Class 2 HGV driver.

Operational team members, HGV Drivers and HGV Mechanic Fitters will be on hand to speak to attendees and let them know about their experiences within their roles.

Working in waste and recycling at Cheshire East offers a range of rewarding roles and varied career pathways while delivering an essential public service. Many of the current team have been with the council for a number of years and are continuing to build long-term careers that provide job security.

Every role in waste and recycling plays and important part in the service, however a big focus of the upcoming recruitment event is HGV Drivers and HGV Mechanic Fitters.

As the council expands the fleet with 11 new electric powered food waste collection vehicles, we need the crews to operate and the mechanics to service these vehicles.

Councillor David Jefferay, Cheshire East Council’s cabinet member for environment, sustainability and waste management, said:

“A big focus of the next recruitment event is to recruit HGV Drivers and HGV Mechanic Fitters, these are skilled specialist roles, and it is important we open our doors at the Environmental Hub to speak with anyone interested in person.

“These roles are vital to the successful delivery of our Simpler Recycling changes and offer a fantastic opportunity to build a rewarding career. Successful applicants will join a supportive team with access to training, development opportunities and potential career progression, while playing a key role in delivering positive change across Cheshire East.”

Current team members said:
“There are opportunities to progress within Cheshire East waste and recycling, I started as a loader, then was lucky enough to go through a funded HGV driver course, which I enjoy now for many years, its great to be part of a crew and supportive managers".

“Being part of a crew on the rounds is great, they are my mates and when it gets tough in extreme weather like the recent heat wave, the camaraderie with your crew keeps us all going”.

“I enjoy being out and about in the community and working alongside a great team. It’s rewarding to know that the work we do has a real impact on residents’ day-to-day lives”.
