Macclesfield Market Hall
The newly refurbished Macclesfield Market Hall is now officially open.
For generations, the indoor market has been at the heart of Macclesfield’s identity, with independent traders at its core. When we asked residents how the market could evolve, they were clear: keep the independent feel, but add more fresh produce, more artisan makers, and better facilities. Their feedback gave us a strong foundation for the improvements that followed.

Improving the market has always been a priority, and a bid to the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund was developed and successfully secured. This allowed us to move ahead with an ambitious vision: to create a vibrant market hall that champions independent retail, supports local food and produce and is a focus point for traders in Macclesfield.
Design work began, and construction started in December 2024. Throughout the process, we were determined that traders should be able to continue operating, and thanks to their patience and flexibility, the works have progressed smoothly. Today, the market hall has been transformed — with a new food hall and seating, modern stalls with improved security, better lighting, clearer sightlines, and a far more welcoming layout.
Alongside the physical changes, we carried out a rebranding exercise, and following consultation, the market is now officially Macclesfield Market Hall, with new signage to reflect its identity.
Creativity has always been part of Macclesfield’s story, and we wanted the refurbished hall to celebrate that. The lift lobby design was the first step, highlighting our traders, and now two talented artists - Peachzz and Tom Edwards Art - created striking new artworks both inside and outside the building.
The difference is dramatic. We’ve already had great feedback from traders and customers, and we’re delighted to welcome new businesses who are joining the market community.
This transformation has made Macclesfield Market Hall a destination once again, increasing footfall, encouraging people to stay longer, and supporting the wider town centre.

The £2.4m refurbishment is being funded through the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which is providing £2.6bn for local investment nationally to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK through investing in communities and place, supporting local businesses and people and skills.
