Pre-patching works

From March, we carry out pre‑patching works as part of our surface dressing programme.

Surface dressing adds a new layer to an existing road surface. It is a proven and cost‑effective way to protect roads and help them last longer.

Why pre‑patching is needed

Before surface dressing can take place, the road must be in good condition.

Cracks, potholes and worn areas weaken the road. If these are not fixed first, the new surface will not last as long.

Pre‑patching repairs these problems so the road is strong and ready for surface dressing. 

How pre‑patching supports surface dressing

Pre-patching:

• fills cracks, holes and damaged areas so the new surface bonds properly
• helps stop water getting into the road and causing further damage
• creates a smoother, more even road surface
• reduces loose chippings after works are complete
• helps the surface dressing last longer, meaning fewer repairs in future
• improves safety by providing a more consistent surface and better grip

Weather and timing

Pre‑patching must be completed before surface dressing starts.

Surface dressing can only be done in dry and warmer weather so materials can set properly. For this reason, works are usually planned in spring and summer to achieve the best results and reduce disruption. 

Where works will be taking place

Road closures and diversions

For the safety of the public and our workforce, road closures will be in place during these works.

• signed diversion routes will be available
• pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times
• cyclists may be asked to dismount through the works
• bus services will continue but may be affected – please check the operator’s website
• waste collection services will not be affected
• emergency services have been informed and will have access

• Letters will be delivered to affected properties before works start
• Letters do not guarantee access through closures at all times, as access points may be restricted for safety
• Emergency vehicle access will always be provided
• Local businesses will remain open and access will be supported where possible
• Delays are likely – please plan journeys ahead of time
• Please make sure no vehicles are parked on the affected roads during the works
