Public urged to prepare for package of road schemes to be carried out in Crewe

18 January 2024

Cheshire East Council is about to carry out a package of planned roadworks at several locations in the borough’s major town. These works are to introduce measures to improve safety and facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Motorists in Crewe are advised that several roads will be affected over a number of weeks, but the council has sequenced the various schemes to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Roadworks will take place on the following roads:

Nantwich Road
Mill Street
Rainbow Street
Earle Street (East and West)
Vernon Way
West Street

Advanced warning signs and diversions will be in place, and all motorists are advised to follow the diversions, while access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times. Pedestrians will be allowed access and cyclists may be required to dismount.

During the works along Earle Street and Vernon Way there will be limited access to Crewe Magistrates Court, the Municipal Building, Crewe Market Hall, the Lifestyle Centre and other public buildings and businesses.

We acknowledge that there is never a right time to carry out extensive road works and drivers are advised to plan their journey in advance and follow the diversion routes.

These works have been scheduled and sequenced to minimise disruption as much as possible, including the Grand Junction Retail Park.

All businesses affected have either already been informed or will be informed ahead of the works starting.

While it is inevitable there will be some disruption, the council will ensure that the works are carefully managed and coordinated to minimise delays as much as possible and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We ask drivers to be patient and plan ahead.

Some of these works are funded through the Safer Roads Fund, which is designed to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England.

There is no financial impact on the council’s highways budget for these schemes.
