Proposal to progress with new primary school approved by Cheshire East Council

16 September 2025

The proposal to progress a scheme for a new Primary School in Basford East, Crewe has been given the green light following approval at Cheshire East Council’s children and families committee, with a proposed opening date of September 2028 (subject to statutory approvals).

Located within the Basford East development, a strategic site identified in the Cheshire East Local Plan – the new school will provide 210 primary places, alongside a 30 place nursery, helping to meet growing demand in the area. It is anticipated that the new school will initially open with 30 Reception places and then increase year on year.

In line with statutory guidance for initiation of a new free school, the council will commence with an informal consultation and will host a series of engagement events and drop-in sessions to include local schools, local councillors and the local community, where we will be seeking views on the new school proposal.

The new school will be subject to statutory approvals including the Department for Education and Planning Permission.

CounCllr Laura Crane 223x280cillor Laura Crane, chair of Cheshire East Council’s children and families committee, said: “This is fantastic news for our residents of Crewe and the surrounding areas and a most welcome addition to our existing education provision in the borough.

“Although there were delays beyond the council’s control, I’m pleased that now we can start to progress the development of the school to help nurture young children in this popular community.

“This is a hugely popular area that continues to grow, so it’s vital that we meet the needs of our residents and adhere to our commitment to provide academic support, as locally as possible to our residents.”
