Next steps set out for Poynton Pool safety works

Cheshire East Council remains committed to working constructively with the local community to develop a solution for Poynton Pool and has provided an updated on the next steps for ensuring public safety.

Following the recent decision of the Strategic Planning Board to not grant planning consent for the spillway improvement works at Poynton Pool, the council has continued its discussions with Poynton Town Council and the Friends of Poynton Pool to further review alternatives.

This includes technical workshops to reassess the choices available and identify a workable long‑term solution.

In the meantime, Poynton Pool remains designated as a high‑risk reservoir under the Reservoirs Act 1975 and the risks to public safety remain to be addressed.

The qualified civil engineer appointed under DEFRA and the Environment Agency has advised the council that additional works must be put in place as an interim measure.

These works require temporarily lowering the reservoir’s water level to reduce flood risk while plans are developed for the longer-term.

The council is now working with contractors and specialists to plan these interim works, which will require environmental permits and licences before they can begin. The council will work to minimise any impact on wildlife and natural habitats while the work is carried out.

Temporary closures of footpaths, parking areas and short-term lane restrictions on London Road are expected while the works take place.

Further details will be shared once the programme of interim works has been agreed and in advance of the works starting.

Considering the longer-term plans, the council continues to work with the regulator, the Environment Agency (EA) Reservoir Safety Enforcement Team to ensure it meets compliance with its legal responsibilities. If it doesn’t, the council risks enforcement and potential fines.

A compliance action plan is being finalised, setting out the mandatory steps the council must take, which will be closely monitored by the regulator.

Throughout this process, ensuring the safety of the dam and the public, while maintaining constructive engagement with the local community through Poynton Town Council and the Friends of Poynton Pool remains the council’s priority.
