Cheshire East Council launches ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ post box scheme across cemeteries

24 August 2026

Cheshire East Council has introduced a new ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ post box scheme across its cemeteries – providing visitors with a unique and meaningful way to remember and stay connected with family members and friends who have passed away.

The specially-designed post boxes have been installed at cemeteries in:

  • Crewe
  • Meadow Brook
  • Sandbach
  • Nantwich
  • Alderley Edge
  • Wilmslow
  • Congleton
  • Macclesfield

A further post box is due to be installed at Weston Cemetery in the coming weeks.

The initiative offers visitors an opportunity to write messages to loved ones they have lost, whether to share memories, mark anniversaries and birthdays, express thoughts and feelings – or simply continue a conversation that remains close to their heart.

Cabinet member Councillor David Jefferay said: “Grief is a deeply personal experience and we recognise that many people find comfort in continuing their connection with those they have lost. The ‘Letters to Loved Ones’ post box scheme provides a simple but meaningful outlet for remembrance, reflection and expression.

“We are delighted by the positive response we have received and hope the initiative offers comfort to those visiting our cemeteries.”

The letters will be handled with dignity and respect and with complete confidentiality. Letters won’t be opened or read.

They will be collected and returned to the cemetery grounds through composting process, allowing them to contribute to the natural environment and support new growth within the cemetery landscape.

The scheme forms part of Cheshire East Council's ongoing commitment to ensuring its cemeteries remain places of reflection, remembrance and community support, while recognising the many ways people choose to honour and remember those they have loved and lost.
