Cumberland Arena set to reopen following major transformation

2 October 2026

Residents across Cheshire East are being invited to explore the new-look Cumberland Arena in Crewe as the venue gets ready to reopen following a significant redevelopment.

Everybody Health and Leisure, in partnership with Cheshire East Council and using funding from the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund (previously known as the Towns Fund), has transformed the Cumberland Arena into a modern, vibrant community hub designed to bring people together through sport, health, fitness and wellbeing.

As well as a new artificial 3G pitch, there is a fully equipped gym, new covered spectator stand, more car parking and secure cycle shelters.

There will also be inclusive cycling activities and three new multi-purpose studio spaces to support fitness classes, community activities and targeted health and wellbeing programmes run by Everybody Health and Leisure.

The venue will reopen on 12 October, with an official opening to be held in December once the finishing touches have been made.

The next phase of development at the arena will begin in spring 2027 when the athletics track will be re-laid – an investment that’s been warmly welcomed by Crewe and Nantwich Athletic Club, which is based at the arena.

Thomas Barton, CEO of Everybody Health and Leisure said: "We're excited to welcome the community back to Cumberland Arena this October.

“The transformed venue is much more than a sports facility. It is a place where people can get active, improve their health, learn new skills, meet new people and enjoy a wide range of community activities.

“We look forward to seeing Cumberland Arena become a thriving hub for local residents, clubs and organisations in Crewe.”

The new gym will provide health-focused daytime access, alongside evening access for members, creating a welcoming environment for both beginners and experienced gym users.

Everybody Health and Leisure will use the new facilities to deliver targeted health and wellbeing programmes, including One You Cheshire East, encompassing the Active Lives, Re-shape, Be Smoke Free and Stand Strong programmes.

The venue will house community learning opportunities, health workshops and development programmes, and will also provide flexible spaces for meetings, community events, business functions and private hire opportunities.

Cllr Mick Warren 2023Councillor Mick Warren, Cabinet member for housing, planning and regeneration, said: “The reopening marks the beginning of a new chapter for Cumberland Arena and represents a major investment in local facilities and the health and wellbeing of our communities.

“The arena is now a really modern and welcoming facility, and a further example of Crewe’s ongoing regeneration programme being delivered.”

Tony Davison, chair of Crewe Town Board – which oversees projects supported by the Local Regeneration Fund in Crewe – said: “The transformation of this much-loved community asset has been significant, and it is great news for the town and wider area that these new facilities can now be enjoyed.

“I look forward to the second stage of the arena’s development being completed next year, and to seeing this investment leave a lasting legacy for the town.”
