Cheshire East foster carer awarded medal for fostering services

Cheshire East Council foster carer Maggie Clarke has been awarded the Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in recognition of more than 20 years of dedicated service to children and young people in the borough.

Maggie, who began fostering in 2006, has supported 49 children aged between three and 17, and currently cares for three foster children.

The British Empire Medal celebrates individuals whose exceptional service has made a significant difference to their community. Maggie was nominated by one of her supervising social workers for her longstanding commitment and impact.

A formal award ceremony will take place on 29 April at Crewe Municipal Building, attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and fellow recipients. Maggie has also been invited to the annual Buckingham Palace Garden Party.

Maggie’s journey into fostering began after her own experience growing up in care. She first stepped in to support two of her cousin’s children during a difficult period—something which evolved into a long‑term vocation supporting Cheshire East’s cared-for children. Her longest placement, which is still ongoing, has lasted 14 years.

Regarding the profession, Maggie said: “I’ve learnt a lot since becoming a foster carer – it definitely takes commitment, resilience, and for you to take on the motherly role!

“I wish more people would do it, and I’d urge anyone to give it a try. Don’t be afraid to stand up for the kids, you’ll soon see how rewarding it can be.

“I’m really proud of myself for receiving this award it’s a really big achievement! Ihave a great relationship with other foster carers at the council, we’re all one big community.”

Councillor Laura Crane, Chair of Cheshire East’s children and families committee, said: “This is a fantastic and well‑deserved honour for one of our own foster carers. Margaret’s unwavering dedication to supporting our most vulnerable children is truly inspiring. She has made an extraordinary impact on so many lives, and we are immensely proud that her compassion, resilience and commitment have been recognised.

“It’s so important we celebrate this award – Margaret has made a profound and lasting impact on countless lives and on our community as a whole, so I can’t think of anyone more deserving of the BEM.

“We urgently need more foster carers in Cheshire East, and I would encourage anyone considering this rewarding path to get in touch. Our fostering team will guide you every step of the way to ensure the right match for your family.”

Between April 2024 and March 2025 Cheshire East approved 11 fostering households, but more support is needed to help look after the many cared for children in the borough.

This latest cohort of foster carers have been celebrated by the planting of pear, apple and plum trees across green spaces over the last few months in the borough, with the final trees being planted at Mortimer Park in Sandbach last week.
