New Towns consultation

The leader and deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, councillors Nick Mannion and Michael Gorman, said: “Cheshire East Council’s corporate policy committee has agreed to formally respond to the Government’s public consultation on New Towns – making it clear that the council remains completely opposed to proposals for Adlington.

“Adlington was initially identified by the Government’s New Towns Taskforce in September 2025. In December, the council unanimously agreed to formally object to the proposal following significant concerns raised by councillors, town and parish councils and local residents.

“In line with that decision, we wrote to the Secretary of State, setting out the council’s objections, including that the proposal did not align with several Government planning policies or with the Cheshire East Local Plan.

“When the Government announced the locations being taken forward for consultation in March this year, Adlington was not included among the seven priority sites. However, it continues to be referenced within the consultation as an alternative location.

“Given the significant concerns already raised about the Adlington proposal, and the fact that it remains listed as an alternative location, the council considers it both appropriate and necessary to respond formally to ensure its position and the views of local residents are clearly represented.”

They added: “The council recognises the ongoing need for additional housing – particularly affordable homes – both locally and nationally.

“However, we remain clear that for sustainable, well‑connected communities to be delivered that meet local housing, infrastructure and employment needs, development must be plan‑led and aligned with our wider strategic planning framework.

“Cheshire East Council will continue to ensure development is guided by our adopted Local Plan Strategy and shaped by the views of our residents.”
