What is adult occupational therapy?

Adult occupational therapy is a service provided to individuals who are experiencing physical, cognitive, emotional or psychosocial challenges that impact their day to do activities. Their environment is assessed to identify what support can be provided to help them regain their independence and improve their wellbeing.

Our occupational therapists support service users who have a long-term health condition resulting in disability and need help with practical tasks. Types of support that may be provided, subject to eligibility criteria, are:

  • equipment
  • minor adaptations
  • advice, equipment and risk assessment if they need help with their mobility
  • advice for individuals are providing physical assistance for someone they care for
  • referral to district councils for major adaptations
  • referral and signposting to other agencies

Which may help with things such as:

  • entering and leaving their home
  • washing, bathing and using the toilet
  • using living and sleeping areas
  • using food preparation and cooking areas
  • reducing risks in their home related to their condition
