Micro Surface Patching Programme

Alongside our main Micro Surfacing Programme, we will be carrying out Micro Surface Patching works at various locations across the borough targeting localised defects rather than full areas.

When will works be happening

The programme of works started in May 2026 and will run through to August 2026. We may not be able to give an exact date as these works are weather dependent and are subject to change.

We’ll send residents and businesses in the areas letters before the works start and put up signs nearby with details of road closures, including dates and times.

What will be happening

We apply a thin layer of bituminous material and aggregate to the surface of the road. This takes about 2 hours to harden. While the laying process is quick, it is weather-dependent, and rain can cause delays.

It’s normal for a newly micro surfaced area of road to appear slightly uneven at first, and ironworks such as gullies and manhole covers may seem lower than the surrounding surface. This is expected and does not affect their function.

In the weeks following the treatment being applied, traffic and weather will help the surface settle and smooth out, resulting in a more uniform and durable finish. Any ironworks identified as too low will be addressed as part of the follow-up programme.

Over a few weeks, the surface will:

  • Settle and smooth out as traffic drives over it
  • Cure and harden as the emulsion binder fully sets
  • Blend in with the existing road for a more uniform appearance

There’s no need to report this to us as a defect—this is an expected part of the process. We appreciate your understanding as the surface naturally improves.

Access and parking

To allow us to complete the work, the area of  road will need to be clear of vehicles and other obstructions. We'll place "No Parking" signs along affected roads beforehand to help you plan. Your cooperation in keeping these areas clear will help us avoid delays and minimise disruption for everyone.

Vehicle access to properties will only be restricted for the short time it takes for the new surface to harden.

We apologise for any inconvenience or delay these works may cause.

Important advice

Please do not walk on the freshly laid material, as it may stick to your shoes and track into your property. Please ensure your shoes are clean before entering your property.

Diversion route

Specific signed diversions will be in place and members of the public are advised to follow this. Alternatively, a breakdown of the full diversion route can be found on one.network.

If you would like to talk to us about the scheme, our on-site supervisor is your best point of contact. Alternatively, you can call us on 0300 123 5020.

Further information

  • Emergency vehicle access is being facilitated through the closure
  • The road closure is necessary to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce whilst we complete the most complex aspects of the scheme
  • Diversion routes are in place and signed to assist in the movement of traffic while works progress
  • Local businesses remain open and access will be facilitated where possible via diversion routes
  • Delays are expected and motorists should plan journeys accordingly
  • Ensure that no vehicles are parked along the impacted roads
