Bridge Street, Congleton: block paving repairs update

We are aware of concerns regarding two areas on Bridge Street, Congleton where block paving has been temporarily reinstated with asphalt following utility works.

One area relates to National Grid works carried out in March 2025 to provide an alternative connection supply. During the excavation, some of the existing paving blocks were damaged and could not be reused, so the area was made safe with a temporary asphalt surface. National Grid has arranged for replacement blocks to be sourced to ensure the permanent repair matches the existing paving as closely as possible. The materials are currently expected to be available from November 2026 at the earliest.

The second area relates to more recent United Utilities works to repair a leak in the carriageway. These works were completed in August, and the area was also temporarily reinstated to keep the area safe and usable.

United Utilities is currently sourcing the replacement paving blocks required for the permanent repair. At this stage, an expected delivery date for the materials is not available.

Next steps

Permanent repairs to both locations will be carried out once the replacement materials have been received.
