Black Lane footbridge, Macclesfield
Black Lane footbridge is temporarily closed to pedestrians and cyclists. Our inspections have identified full-depth cracking in the concrete deck, which shows signs of movement when crossed.
To ensure public safety, the footbridge will remain closed until a suitable repair solution is in place. Access from Black Lane to the Middlewood Way footpath is still available via the bridge to the south.
Current plans
Following inspections and ongoing assessments, we can confirm that budget has been allocated within the 2026/2027 highways programme which will enable works to be carried out on the bridge. We will now be moving forward with the next stage to deliver a new footbridge, which will include collaborative works with utility providers.

Further information
- The bridge closure is necessary to protect the safety of members of the public
- A small diversion route is in place to a nearby bridge and signed
- Pedestrians and cyclists must use the diversion due to the closure
