A500 - Essential Bridge Repairs
We are carrying out essential repair work to a bridge expansion joint on the A500 westbound carriageway towards Crewe, between roundabouts 2 and 3.
During an emergency call out, an issue was identified with a bridge expansion joint after part of a rubber sealing strip became detached. The defective material was removed and the area made safe, with temporary traffic management put in place while further investigations were carried out.
We are continuing to monitor the bridge joint and progress plans for a permanent repair.
Current traffic management
To maintain the safety of road users while further inspections and assessments are carried out, a lane closure is in place in both directions on the A500 between roundabouts 2 and 3.
A temporary 30mph speed restriction is also in place through the affected area and will remain while the bridge expansion joint continues to be monitored and a permanent repair solution is developed.
Why is this work needed
Bridge expansion joints allow a structure to safely expand and contract as temperatures change and traffic loads pass over it. The repair work is necessary to ensure the bridge remains safe and operational for road users while longer-term repairs are planned and delivered.
Updates will be provided as further information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding while this essential work continues.
