Black Lane footbridge, Macclesfield

Black Lane footbridge is temporarily closed to pedestrians and cyclists. Our inspections have identified full-depth cracking in the concrete deck, which shows signs of movement when crossed.

To ensure public safety, the footbridge will remain closed until a suitable repair solution is in place. Access from Black Lane to the Middlewood Way footpath is still available via the bridge to the south.

Current plans

We have completed the outline design for the replacement bridge and are now progressing through the detailed design phase. This includes working closely with utility companies and service providers whose equipment is supported beneath the bridge to ensure the demolition and construction can be carried out safely.

We expect to be in a position to begin manufacturing the bridge components shortly. In the meantime, we are reviewing funding and programme availability to confirm when the bridge replacement works will take place.

As part of the construction phase, the surrounding area will be cleared of vegetation and tidied up to help ensure the route remains a welcoming, safe and accessible footpath for users.
