Short breaks service – an update
11 February 2021
Cheshire East Council’s children with disabilities short breaks team support children and young people with additional needs and disabilities aged 0 – 18 and their parents/carers.
The team provides advice and support about short break providers, groups and activities across Cheshire East which can be done via telephone or email.
There are currently 10 providers of short breaks, funded by the council and the recommission of these contracts is currently underway.
During the early stages of this process, the council engaged and consulted with:
- 57 children & young people via a questionnaire developed with Springfield School in Crewe.
- 150 Parent Carers via an online questionnaire. Face to face discussions have also taken place at various coffee mornings across the borough
- Over 25 providers via an online questionnaire and face to face discussions with those who deliver activity sessions, events and support to children and young people with additional needs.
The council is now at the stage where all interested providers are being asked to submit bids for the future delivery of sessions/activities, by the 18 February 2021. These bids will be evaluated, and new contracts will be in place by 1 June 2021. Cheshire East Council will work with providers and the Cheshire East Parent Carer Forum in promoting newly commissioned services prior to the contract start date.
Until new contracts are in place, current providers are continuing to offer adapted services that meet the current Covid restrictions and ensure that safety is paramount.
