Cheshire East Local Area SEND Inspection - Important Information for Parent Carers

We have been notified today (Monday 5 March 2018) that Cheshire East has been selected for a Local Area Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Inspection. The inspection will begin on Monday 12 March 2018 and will be completed on Friday 16 March 2018.

Under the Children and Families Act 2014, the government placed new duties on the local health, care and education services that provide for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities. The inspection will evaluate how effectively the local area:

  • identifies the needs of children and young people who have special educational
  • needs and or disabilities meets the needs of these children and young people so that their outcomes and chances of participating fully in society improve.

The views of children and young people who have special educational needs and or disabilities, and the views of their parents and carers will be gathered during visits to a number of early years settings, schools, colleges and specialist services. These views are critical to the inspection process. During the inspection, Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors will be keen to speak to as many children and young people and their parents and carers as possible.

The Inspection will focus on three fundamental questions:

  • How effectively does the local area identify those with SEND ?
  • How effectively does the local area assess and meet the needs of those with SEND ?
  • How effectively the local area improves outcomes those with SEND across health, education and social care?

Further information on the inspection is available from the following sources:

Inspection meeting with parents and carers

As part of the inspection, inspectors met with Cheshire East parents and carers of children and young people with SEND on Tuesday 13 March 2018. Due to overwhelming demand, there were 3 meetings with inspectors at different venues in Macclesfield, Holmes Chapel and Crewe at the same time.

Thank you to all those parents and carers who took part in these meetings. As the groups were large if you were unable to put your view across at the meeting you can email them to

Inspectors would like to remind parents that all their views will be considered. Inspectors cannot consider individual cases and do not respond directly to any comments you submit.

Online webinar for parents and carers

The inspection will included an online webinar to allow  Cheshire East parents and carers of children and young people with SEND to contribute. The webinar took place as follows:

  • Thursday 8 March 2018 Time: 1:30pm

It was led by the lead inspector who asked parents and carers about their views and experiences on how effectively Cheshire East is fulfilling the above responsibilities.

While we understand that many parents and carers may have views on their experience that extend before the implementation of the reforms in September 2014, we remind parent carers that it is important that this opportunity is used as the start for gathering evidence about the impact of the reforms as part of the new inspections.

Ofsted or the CQC will not be able to follow up or comment upon individual cases.
