The Silk Road / Middlewood Way Footbridge Maintenance

We are working to deliver essential maintenance on the iconic footbridge at the Silk Road, Macclesfield from 24 July. The work will include, replacement of the current rotting timber decking boards and treatment to the exposed timber sections of the footbridge.

What will happen

In order for the maintenance work to take place safely, the scheme will require road closures and will involve:

  • Replacing all timber decking boards with recycled plastic decking - The planks that will be used are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles
  • Applying wood treatment to all of the timber deck sections and parapets

Works to deliver these improvements are scheduled to start on 24 July, and will take six weeks to complete

Whilst the work is carried out, we will also undertake maintenance activities such as grass cutting, litter picking and drainage cleansing. This approach aims to minimise future maintenance visits, and further closures and disruption.

We understand there is no right time to undertake work in such a key location as the Silk Road, Macclesfield however, the scheme has been carefully planned during the summer holidays to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and members of the travelling public.

When will it happen

A number of road closures are necessary during the scheme to protect the safety of both members of the public and our workforce whilst the most complex aspects are completed. However, the footbridge on Middlewood Way will remain open at all times during the scheme.

Works to deliver these improvements are scheduled to start on 24 July under three phases as detailed below, and will take six weeks to complete.
