HS2 stations and trains
A HS2 Hub Station at the existing Crewe site will continue its vital role as a major connection point with the rest of the North West, Liverpool, North Wales and the Potteries’ existing rail network. Under existing proposals, Crewe station will be served by two trains per hour to London, one terminating at Liverpool via Runcorn, and one at Preston via Wigan and Warrington. From 2027, these services will connect Crewe to take advantage of the new high speed service to London.
The high speed trains that will operate between Crewe and London are ‘Classic Compatible Trains’. This means they can run at high speed on the new line and also convert to operate on the existing rail network at normal operating speeds. As well as running from Crewe to London, they will also serve Manchester, Liverpool and Scotland from Crewe.
The overall number of high speed rail services per hour for both ‘dedicated’ and ‘classic compatible’, is 18 trains per hour running to and from London by 2033, and up to an addition 12 trains per hour to and from Birmingham. A network of proposed services will utilise this full capacity and these include two trains between Crewe and London. Additionally, the new line will free up additional capacity on the existing West Coast Main Line, which could allow the potential for additional services and destinations to be served from Macclesfield, Wilmslow and Crewe.
With these current plans, Cheshire East will have high speed connectivity to London from Crewe, however What the current proposals do not provide regular high speed connectivity from Crewe to Manchester, Scotland or Birmingham. These benefits would not just serve Crewe, but act as a regional hub which serves across Cheshire East, the North West, North Wales, Liverpool and the Potteries.
