Cheshire East Council Petitions Scheme
Cheshire East Council welcomes petitions and recognises that petitions are one way in which people can let us know their concerns. We will treat something as a petition if it is identified as being a petition, or if it seems to us that it is intended to be a petition.
- Petitions may be created, signed and submitted online (e-petitions)
- Written petitions can be sent to Petitions Officer, Legal and Democratic Services, Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, Cheshire, CW11 1HZ, or email email@example.com
We treat as a petition any communication which is signed by or sent to us on behalf of a number of people. For practical purposes, we normally set a requirement for at least 10 signatories or petitioners before we treat it as a petition. Whilst we like to hear from people who live, work or study in Cheshire East, this is not a requirement and we would take equally seriously a petition from, for example, 10 visitors to the District on the subject of facilities at one of our visitor attractions.

Petitions can also be presented to the Mayor prior to a meeting of the Council. These meetings take place on a bi monthly basis, dates and times can be found on the Agendas, Minutes and Reports page.
If you would like to present your petition to the Mayor, or would like your councillor to present it on your behalf, please contact the Petitions Officer at Cheshire East Council, Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, CW11 1HZ at least 10 working days before the meeting and they will talk you through the process.
Petitions for a referendum
If a petition calls for a referendum, 5% of the electorate must sign it for it to be considered valid. In 2012 that number is 14,683.
