Payment made to a senior officer in 2013
17 April 2018
There is a need to offer some important clarification following a story published in the Crewe Chronicle (on 9 April 2018) about £45,160 paid to a council officer in 2013.
A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: “A quote used in the article asserts that making the payment in question would have been ‘illegal’, unless it was approved by the external auditor at the time. That is simply not correct.
“There was no legal requirement for such a payment to have been approved by the external auditor. The external auditor has confirmed that they do not have any role in pre-approving payments made by audited bodies.
“It is somewhat regrettable that the Chronicle and its contributor did not more carefully check the basis of that assertion before going to print.”
