Say ‘hi’ to the high street

It has been a tough time for local businesses and now that Covid-19 restrictions are lifting, it’s time to show them some support and say ‘hi’ to the high street again.

In the latest stage of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown, all non-essential retail was allowed to reopen from April 12, as well as restaurants, bars and cafes for outdoor table service only and hair and nail salons, libraries, and gyms.

While businesses start to welcome back customers, we have launched a new campaign – funded by the European Regional Development Fund – reminding you of all the great reasons to support local and giving you advice about how to shop safely.

HM Gov ERDF Say Hi logos

Welcome backWave to those friendly faces. Smell the freshly-baked bread. Try on some new shoes. Grab a sandwich. Browse for bargains. Fill your basket with locally-grown fruit and veg. Get caught up in the hustle and bustle. And all the other things you’ve missed while you’ve had to shop online. Then raise a glass to local shop owners in your friendly local. Because now, more than ever, your custom matters.

Stay Safe While You Shop

Lockdown may be lifting, step by step, but we still need to take care we’re not spreading COVID-19. Follow these safety and sanitation measures to support local businesses, so they won’t be forced to turn you away - or risk a fine.

Please wear a mask

Make sure you pop your facemask on before you step inside a shop.

Sanitise your hands

Help yourself to hand sanitiser where provided - or take your own pocket-sized sanitiser with you.

Please social distance

Always keep your distance - stay at least 2 metres away from other shoppers and give people plenty of space to pass.

Support for high street businesses

We know that businesses have been working extremely hard to prepare for our town centres reopening, to ensure they help stop the spread of the virus and are in line with the government’s Covid-secure measures.

To support you to welcome back customers safely, we have made posters featuring Covid safety messaging available for you to download and display free of charge.

Our regulatory services team is continuing to offer guidance and support to businesses regarding the current restrictions put in place by government. If you have any questions or concerns, our officers are here to help.

You can find more information and guidance on our COVID-19 support for business webpages.

To support hospitality businesses, we have amended our temporary pavement licence, making it free for businesses to apply. The licences, also known as ‘alfresco licences’, are valid until September 2022 and grant permission to set up temporary outside seating on pavements to allow for social distancing measures.

We are continuing to invite applications for the new Restart Grant, which supports eligible non-essential retail businesses and hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gyms with one-off grants of up to £18,000 to help them reopen safely.
