In Schools
Cheshire East is dedicated to promoting
recycling. Read on to find out more about what we're doing to help
schools in our area. We encourage every school to have a Paperbank
on site for collection of paper for recycling. Most schools have an
Eco-team whose members collect paper from classrooms and offices to
fill the Paperbank. School Bursars can just phone up to request
collection.
Junior Recycling Officer of the Year 2011
Recycling Officer of
the Year 2011
This year's Junior Recycling Officer and Junior Energy Monitors
of the Year event took place at Tatton Park on Thursday 7 July
2011.Cheshire's 2011 Junior Recycling Officers of the Year are
Rebecca Paley and Callum Binner from Gainsborough Primary and
Nursery School in Crewe.
The two were presented with a Saracen mountain bike and a trophy
each and all finalists received £15 in vouchers and medals.
Councillor Don Stockton is pictures with the winners and their
display. Other Junior Recycling Officer of the Year finalists were
from St Vincent de Paul Primary School, Knutsford and Astbury St
Mary's CE Primary School.
They were selected for their hard work promoting recycling
throughout the year by holding assemblies, competitions and
organising collections of paper, mobile phones and toner
cartridges. The children used a selection of thoughtful and
entertaining ways to get their message across, and all had been
involved in school gardens.
Councillor Don Stockton, representing Rod Medlove, Cabinet
member with responsibility for Environmental services said: “The
displays and presentations were of a very high standard. I’m
pleased to find so many schools encouraging composting and waste
recycling with such enthusiasm. These young officers have a great
deal of responsibility and their work is extremely worthwhile. The
finalists did very well, so congratulations to you all.”
The finals were held at Tatton Park, where all the finalists
presented the work they had undertaken to raise awareness of waste
reduction and recycling in their schools. As part of the day, the
children, parents and teachers played Energy and Recycling Bingo
and Recycling Top Trumps. After the presentation of the
Awards, the families and teachers were taken on a tour of Tatton's
Home Farm to meet the animals and hear about composting and
recycling in the past and today.
Recycling Books and MaterialsYou could ask your teachers to
order project books and materials (including guided reading) on
Recycling from Cheshire's Education Library Service.
They can be
contacted at the Council's education library service.
Composting in Schools
Composting at school is a fun way to learn about nature while
also reducing the amount of organic waste that the school produces.
An added bonus is that students can actually get to see the end
result of their efforts - their finished compost being used to
beautify their school's grounds.
