Walking Bus
What is a Walking Bus
A walking bus is a group of children walking to school with at
least two parent volunteers. Parents take it in turns, on a rota
basis, to walk with the children. There is always a ‘driver’ who
leads the bus, and a ‘conductor’ who walks at the back. The more
children there are on the bus, the more adults walk with
them.
What are the benefits of Walking Buses
The scheme can provide benefits to children, parents, the school
and the local community. The walking bus:
- Promotes healthy exercise
- Develops pedestrian and social skills
- Reduces traffic congestion around schools
- Improves air quality
- Saves time for parents
- Gives children independence, whilst in a safe environment
How to set up a Walking Bus
Cheshire East Council has produced a set of guidelines for
setting up a Walking Bus scheme. The guidance consists of two
documents: How to set up a Walking Bus, which is a guide for
headteachers, governors and teaching staff, and Walking Bus
Guidelines, which is a handbook for parents and carers who will act
as operators for the scheme.
