Road Safety
The Road Safety Unit aims to:
- minimise road crashes and casualties
- improve access to the highway for all, especially vulnerable road users
- address road safety issues that affect quality of life in our communities.
We will achieve these aims through a combination of Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Training and Publicity, working in partnership with others where we can. In this way we will contribute to wider service and corporate objectives that are consistent with these aims.
Pass Plus - discounted places now available
Cheshire East young drivers can claim £100 off the cost of a Pass Plus course that could help slash their insurance premiums and reduce their proven higher risk of being involved in a crash.
50% off Advanced Motorcycle Training
East residents can now take the Institute of Advanced Motorists ‘Skill for Life’ advanced motorcycling course for just £69 (usual price £139). Thanks to funding from Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership, a limited number of half-price places have been made available to any motorcyclist who lives in the Cheshire East area. The subsidised courses are being offered as part of a targeted road safety initiative involving the council, police and fire and rescue service to reduce local motorcyclist collisions and casualties. South Cheshire Advanced Motorcyclists (S.C.A.M.) are delivering the courses and places are available on a first-come-first-served basis. To book, contact Chris Steel at S.C.A.M. on 01606 853502 or 07773 480492 or e-mail info@scam-online.org
Red Routes -

'Red Routes' are routes across Cheshire which potentially carry the highest risk to road users of suffering a serious or fatal crash.
Red Routes are easily identified with their unique red road signs, advising motorists of the number of crashes and people injured along these routes in three years.
A high profile campaign is currently taking place on the A530 Middlewich Road, between Middlewich and Nantwich. Use the link above to find out more information about this route, including how you can help reduce your risk and make this Red Route safer.
Setting the Pace on Speed -
'Set the Pace - Make the Commitment' is a campaign tackling the problems caused by inappropriate and excessive speed in local communities. It asks drivers and passengers to make a personal written commitment to drive or encourage others to drive at an appropriate speed for the environment and road conditions and always within the legal speed limit. The idea is that those who have signed up will simultaneously 'set the pace' of other motorists by their example. The campaign will be promoted by volunteers from community groups, organisations and businesses within their own localities as part of a proactive approach towards the improvement of the safety and quality of life in their neighbourhood. Find out more about Set the Pace and make your commitment today.
Child Car Seats -
Did you know that an estimated 75% of child car seats and restraints are incorrectly fitted? The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) have launched a website with loads of information and advice - RoSPA Child Car Seats. You may also find the Britax UK site of use - it has a Vehicle Compatibility Chart for 'Isofix', the worldwide standardised fitting system between a car and a child seat - and Mothercare, who can also advise and fit child car seats.
Road Safety Engineering -
We investigate the occurrence and distribution of accidents on Cheshire's roads and devise engineering measures to reduce the risk of future accidents. The limited financial resources available are concentrated on sites or areas where personal injury accidents occur. Road Safety Audits are done at various stages in the development of highway schemes to ensure that they operate as safely as practicable. For further details please contact Road Safety Unit.
Road Casualties Cheshire - Annual Report 2007 -
This document analyses road collisions and casualties in Cheshire during 2006, it also presents and compares figures from earlier years with the targets set by the Government for the year 2010.
To help with the viewing of this document we have divided it into easily downloadable sections, these sections can be viewed by using the link below.
Personal Injury Collision Data -
The Road Safety Unit is responsible for managing the Council's personal injury collision database for incidents that occur on the highway. This information is provided to us by Cheshire Constabulary, who are legally responsible for recording all relevant information to national standard. The Road Safety Unit uses the data to identify current road safety issues and problems, which in turn guides the annual road safety investment and work programmes.
To request collision data for a particular location in Cheshire, please download the application form (PDF, 25KB) and return it to the address provided on the form with the appropriate payment.
Did you know?.... 25% of collisions involving a Cheshire resident happens within 1km of their home address.
