Traveline NextBuses and Traveline Txt

Traveline Nextbuses is a new mobile phone internet service that gives you the next bus times anywhere in Scotland, England and Wales straight to your mobile phone. It is designed to work on mobile phones that have internet access.

Scheduled bus times are shown for most stops with live times displayed where available. For Cheshire East stops only scheduled times are displayed currently.

How can I get NextBuses on my mobile phone?

Send a text message with the word TRAVELINE to 84268 to receive a bookmark for the service or visit the NextBuses mobile site to try it out.

There are also a number of apps available for use on iPhones and Android smartphones. Full details can be found on the Traveline Nextbuses Apps Page. These apps are usually under £3.

Your normal contract allowance and data charges will apply when using Nextbuses. Check with your mobile operator for details.

How does it work?

Depending on whether your using the basic service or an app you can enter either a postcode, a street and town (eg Mill Street, Crewe), or a stop code if you know it. Some apps can use your signal to find your location and zoom to it on a map helping you find nearby stops more easily.

Browse Stop List

Use the map or the list to work out which bus stop you want. Make sure you choose the stop on the right side of the road for your journey. Click on the relevant stop from the results list. On some phones, you can also press the corresponding number on your phone keypad.

If you have searched by a street name and town, there may be many results. If you can't find the stop you wanted, or the results aren't where you expected, scroll down your screen to view other locations. If you still can't find your stop, refine your search eg; by using a postcode.

Departure Board

  • You will now get the times of the next buses leaving the stop. Live information is shown where available eg "in 6 min", otherwise the scheduled departure is shown as a time eg "08:31".
  • You can click on one of the route numbers to see more bus times on the same route.
  • The other options on the screen allow you to look at nearby stops or start a new search.
  • You can bookmark the departure board on most phones for 1-click use in future.

It does not work on my phone (using Traveline Txt)

If you can't get mobile internet on your phone, you can check the next buses from a particular bus stop by using the Traveline Txt service.

Every bus stop in the UK has been issued with a unique code, which you can text to 84268. The codes in Cheshire East will be displayed on your bus stop display or can be found on Transport Direct.

To find the stop codes in your area check the stop details on the maps at Transport Direct Txt Codes.

  1. Using the homepage "Find a Place" option put your address or postcode into the "Place" box and click "go".
  2. Check the names of the stops which appear in your area (you may need to zoom in on the stops - the stop names and codes appear only when zoomed in to the largest scale).
  3. Note down the codes for the stops which you use regularly they look like "chwmtap". Then text the code to 84268.

The txt message you send will cost your normal txt message charge. In some areas the reply will be free of charge. In most areas including Cheshire the reply will cost up to 25p.

Planning your Journey by Bus, Train, Ferry and Coach or a mixture of methods

Transport Direct

Please note that the journey planner opens in new browser window.

If you don't know your service number or need to travel using a mixture of different travel modes then you can use the Transport Direct journey planner to plan a door to door journey.

If your journey only involves the train or a National Express coach service then you are better going direct to their own websites, which provide full service details along with fare and booking information:

The Transport Direct site is not fully accessible.

If you have difficulty using the site you can call the Cheshire Traveline for timetable information for any bus, rail or coach service serving Cheshire and Warrington on 0871 200 22 33 (calls cost 10p per minute plus network extras) open 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm.

Cheshire Traveline can now accept calls using the Text Relay system. For more information visit the Text Relay website or call 18001 0871 200 22 33.

What is the Council's role in these services?

Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester Councils working in partnership run the Traveline call centre based at Ellesmere Port and are responsible for the Cheshire bus stop and timetable data that is used in the NextBuses, Traveline Txt and journey planning services.

The bus times used in these services are those times supplied to the Council by the bus operators. Most operators only supply times at the principle timing points and we use a computer calculation to estimate the rest of the intermediate stop times.
