Safety Cameras
Safety cameras are used where there is a history of speed
related or red light running injury crashes. The aim is to reduce
the number of casualties on Cheshire's roads and make them safer
for everyone. For more information see the
Safety Camera Strategy (PDF, 45K).
Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership
On 15 December 2005 the Secretary of State for Transport
announced the ending of the National Safety Camera Programme and
netting off funding arrangement for cameras in England and Wales.
Following this the national Safety camera programme ceased to exist
as of March 31st 2007.
Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership (CSCP) is therefore no longer
in operation. Safety cameras, however, will be integrated into the
wider road safety delivery process, given the level of success they
have had in reducing vehicle speeds and road casualties.
Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership
In Cheshire, the structure of the camera partnership evolved in
to a wider road safety partnership. Launched Thursday 29 March
2007, 'Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership' (CSRP
website mysaferroads ) will
encompass all road safety activities including the use of safety
cameras in traffic law enforcement. The key stakeholders of CSRP
are: Cheshire Constabulary, Cheshire East Council,
Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service, Halton Borough Council,
The Highways Agency, Her Majesty's Court Service and Warrington
Borough Council.
The overall aim of CSRP is to reduce the number of people killed
and seriously injured on the roads of Cheshire, Halton and
Warrington. Intelligence-led and results-driven, CSRP will target
resources where they are needed the most in its drive and
commitment to road casualty reduction.
"Death and serious injuries have fallen by 42% on roads where
speed cameras have been in operation" Transport Secretary Alistair
Darling (December 2005).
An independent report of the two-year pilot scheme where eight
areas were allowed to re-invest some of the money from speeding
fines into the installation of more cameras and increased camera
use, has found that the presence of speed cameras really does make
a positive difference. Read more about it in the Department for
Transport's News Release

Department for Transport - Safety Cameras.
Did you know that...
- the term 'Safety Cameras' refers to speed and
red light cameras
- speeding fines are £60 and 3 penalty points on your
licence
- fancy number plates do not fool the cameras!
- speed cameras are there to save lives, not to trap drivers
