New Access to a Highway

A crossing across a public footpath or verge for your vehicle to gain access to your property from the highway is known as a 'dropped kerb', crossover or vehicle crossing. It must be built to specific standards and approved by your council and in some cases planning permission is also required.

Cheshire East Council's contractor can carry out the necessary work at the landowner or developer's expense.

Regulation

  • Highways Act 1980 Section 184

Apply

We recommend that you contact the Development Control Officers for advice before submitting an application. They will advise whether planning permission is likely to be required and the final decision will be made by the Local Planning Authority.

Fees

Application Evaluation Process

Access designs may be subject to Road Safety Audit procedures in some cases, dependent on the nature and scale of the proposal.

Even if planning permission is not needed, all vehicular crossings over the footway or verge require permission from the Highway Authority (ie: the Council). Crossings must be constructed to Cheshire East Council's specification given in the guidance.
